Ezra Learning vs Veritas Press

Veritas Press is a classical Christian publisher that sells self-paced video courses, live online classes through Veritas Scholars Academy and book kits for the parent to teach, all priced per course; Ezra is a Grades 1–9 curriculum in five subjects priced for the household. Here is how they compare, line by line. Facts checked October 14, 2026; sources at the end.

In one minute

What each one is

Veritas Press is a classical Christian curriculum company begun in 1996 by Marlin and Laurie Detweiler, best known for its history and Bible flashcards and its Omnibus course. Families can buy it three ways: self-paced online courses in History ($249 each) and Bible ($199 each) for Grades 2–6 and Omnibus ($349 each, or $899 for a complete level with the books) for Grades 7–12; live online classes for K–12 at Veritas Scholars Academy, an accredited school, at $729 a year per grammar-school course or $829 per secondary course plus an annual fee of $449–$729; or You Teach kits of books and lesson plans the parent teaches from. A Grades 2–6 child taking the two self-paced subjects, History and Bible, pays $448 for the year; math, phonics and grammar are added as books or live classes.

Ezra Learning covers Grades 1–9 in Mathematics, English, Spelling, Bible and Geography, with about 6,900 hands-on practice skills and 1,220 narrated lessons, each with a printable sheet. Scripture (Berean Standard Bible) is read word for word in every strand of every subject; there are no cartoons, games or characters. The Family plan is $15 a month per household, up to six children, and the first two sections of every subject and grade are free.

Veritas Press fits best when…

Choose Veritas Press if you want a classical education with history and Bible taught in chronological order, you want video courses with games that grade themselves for history and Bible, you want live classes with a real teacher and classmates and a transcript from an accredited school, you want Omnibus for a teenager reading the great books, you need kindergarten or Grades 10–12, or you want Science and History.

Ezra fits best when…

Choose Ezra if your children are in Grades 1–9, you want Math, English, Spelling, Bible and Geography in one place for one price rather than a course at a time, you prefer one narrated voice and a line drawing to characters and games, you want practice the child does with his hands and that grades itself, you want a Bible verse read aloud in every strand of every subject, and you have more than one child — the price is for the household.

Price

What it costs your family

The biggest practical difference is how the price is counted. Veritas Press is priced per student. Ezra is priced per household, so a second, third or fourth child costs nothing more.

Veritas Press, a year, per student

Ezra: $15 × 12 at the introductory price (normally $19 a month). Veritas Press: $448 a year for one child in Grades 2–6: one self-paced History course ($249) and one self-paced Bible course ($199), the two subjects Veritas teaches self-paced at that age; math, phonics, grammar and the rest are bought as books or live classes on top; the chart multiplies by the number of children. Live online classes at Veritas Scholars Academy are $729 a year per grammar-school course and $829 per secondary course, plus an annual fee of $449–$729; self-paced access lasts 12 months and carries a 90-day refund. Complete grade packages are sold in the Veritas store, but their prices did not load for us and are not quoted here.

Lessons

How a lesson is taught

In a Veritas self-paced course the child logs in and watches a video lesson told through characters and storytelling, then does the interactive review and games on the screen; the course grades itself and the parent sees the results, and access lasts 12 months from activation. The history courses walk through 32 events in order, the Old Testament beside ancient Egypt and the New Testament beside Greece and Rome, with flashcards and a project workbook sold alongside. In a live class at Veritas Scholars Academy the child meets his teacher and classmates on video in real time, does homework the teacher grades, and the school keeps his transcript. In a You Teach kit the parent opens the day-by-day lesson plan and teaches from the books, with nothing on a screen.

An Ezra lesson is a short narrated slideshow: one voice reads every word while a simple line drawing builds up on the slide — no cartoons, no characters, no questions asked of the child inside the lesson. The lesson ends with a Bible verse read aloud, and every lesson has a printable sheet for the child to do on paper. Then the child goes to the practice skills of that strand, which are hands-on: drag the pieces, tap the picture, build the number, sort the words, drop a pin on the map.

Scripture

Where the Bible sits

Both programs are Christian. Veritas Press describes its education as "grounded in Scripture" and "Christ-centered," with the tagline "Restoring culture to Christ." Bible is taught as its own course from Genesis to the Gospels, and the history courses run the Bible's events in step with the nations around them. In Ezra, Scripture is not a subject on the side. Every strand of Mathematics, English, Spelling and Geography closes with a verse from the Berean Standard Bible, read aloud word for word, and a Scripture practice skill sits at the end of every strand. Bible is also a subject of its own in every grade, with a character strand (obey right away, tell the truth, no quarrelling) in each. The verses are never paraphrased.

Fair is fair

What Veritas Press has that Ezra does not

Kindergarten and Grades 10–12. Live classes with a teacher and classmates, from an accredited school with more than 200 teachers, a diploma program and transcripts. Omnibus, a reading of the great books of the West with history and theology, for Grades 7–12. History as a full subject, told in order from Egypt to the present, and Science through books and live classes. Latin, rhetoric and logic. Flashcards, project workbooks and whole book kits the family keeps. A 90-day refund on self-paced courses.

What Ezra has that Veritas Press does not

A Bible verse in every strand of every subject, read aloud word for word from the Berean Standard Bible. Five subjects — Math, English, Spelling, Bible and Geography — in one place for one price, rather than a course at a time. One calm narrated voice with a simple line drawing on every slide, and no characters, games or rewards shops. Practice the child does with his hands, generated endlessly and graded on the spot, with a report that shows mastery, minutes and where he needs a hand. A printable sheet for every lesson and a library of 147 books and packs. One price for the household, however many children. And two free sections of every subject and grade, so a family can see all of it before paying anything.

Questions

Questions families ask

Is Veritas Press cheaper than Ezra Learning?

It depends on the path. A Grades 2–6 child taking the two self-paced subjects, History ($249) and Bible ($199), pays $448 a year, and math, phonics and grammar come on top as books or live classes; Ezra is $180 a year for the household at the introductory price, five subjects included. A live class at Veritas Scholars Academy is $729 a year per grammar-school course or $829 per secondary course, plus an annual fee of $449–$729, and every course is priced per child.

Does Ezra Learning cover high school?

No. Ezra covers Grades 1–9. Veritas Press runs to Grade 12 with Omnibus, rhetoric, live classes and a diploma program through its accredited academy, so a family with a Grade 10–12 student needs Veritas or another program for those years.

Does Ezra have Science or History?

No, on purpose. Ezra teaches Mathematics, English, Spelling, Bible and Geography. Veritas Press teaches history as one of its main subjects, from the Old Testament and ancient Egypt to the present, and offers science through books and live classes.

Is Veritas Press Christian?

Yes. It describes its education as grounded in Scripture and Christ-centered, teaches Bible as its own course and runs history in step with the Bible. Ezra is Christian as well, and reads a verse from the Berean Standard Bible in every strand of every subject.

Do the Veritas self-paced courses have games and characters?

Yes. Veritas describes its self-paced courses as video lessons with memorable characters and storytelling, followed by interactive review and games that grade themselves. Ezra has one narrated voice and a line drawing on every slide, with no characters or games, and practice the child does with his hands.

Can I try either one for free?

No free trial is listed on Veritas Press's site; self-paced courses can be refunded within 90 days, and the academy offers a free call with a family consultant. Ezra keeps the first two sections of every subject and grade free, with no time limit and no card.
