Ezra Learning vs Teaching Textbooks

Teaching Textbooks is a math-only app for Math 3 through Pre-Calculus, priced per course per student; Ezra is a Christian Grades 1–9 curriculum in five subjects, priced for the household. Here is how the two compare on mathematics, line by line. Facts checked October 14, 2026; sources at the end.

In one minute

What each one is

Teaching Textbooks 4.0 is a homeschool mathematics app from Teaching Textbooks, LLC, covering Math 3 through Pre-Calculus — ten courses, mathematics only. Every lesson begins with an interactive lecture, the problems and hints are read aloud to the student, every problem has a step-by-step audiovisual solution, and all lessons are graded automatically into a gradebook the parent can print. A 12-month enrollment is per student per course: $48.95 for Math 3, 4 or 5, $63.95 for Math 6 or 7, $79.95 for Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1 or Geometry, and $83.95 for Algebra 2 or Pre-Calculus; a Large Family Discount gives 4 to 8 students in one household a course each for $239.95. The first 15 lessons of any course are free.

Ezra Learning covers Grades 1–9 in Mathematics, English, Spelling, Bible and Geography, with about 6,900 hands-on practice skills and 1,220 narrated lessons, each with a printable sheet. Scripture (Berean Standard Bible) is read word for word in every strand of every subject; there are no cartoons, games or characters. The Family plan is $15 a month per household, up to six children, and the first two sections of every subject and grade are free.

Teaching Textbooks fits best when…

Choose Teaching Textbooks if you need math past Grade 9 — Algebra 2, Geometry, Pre-Calculus — or want a course that does all of the teaching with a worked audiovisual solution for every problem, a permanent gradebook for records, offline use on a tablet, or a 90-day pause for holidays; and if you have four or more children in Math 3 and up, the Large Family Discount prices them together.

Ezra fits best when…

Choose Ezra if your children are in Grades 1–9, you want math beside English, Spelling, Bible and Geography in one program rather than math alone, you want a Christian program with a Bible verse read aloud in every strand of every subject, you prefer practice the child does with his hands — building the number, dragging the pieces, sorting — to typed answers, and you have more than one child: the price is for the household, and it covers five subjects.

Price

What it costs your family

The biggest practical difference is how the price is counted. Teaching Textbooks is priced per student. Ezra is priced per household, so a second, third or fourth child costs nothing more.

Ezra: $15 × 12 at the introductory price (normally $19 a month). Teaching Textbooks: $48.95 a year per student, for one 12-month Math 3 enrollment; the chart multiplies by the number of children. Math 3, 4 and 5 are $48.95 each; Math 6 and 7 $63.95; Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1 and Geometry $79.95; Algebra 2 and Pre-Calculus $83.95, each per student for 12 months. The Large Family Discount is $239.95 for 12 months for 4 to 8 students in one household, one course each. The first 15 lessons of any course are free, with no expiry and no card.

Lessons

How a lesson is taught

A Teaching Textbooks lesson is done in the app: the child watches the interactive lecture that opens every lesson, then works the problems of that lesson, with each problem and hint read aloud, a scratchpad to work on, and a step-by-step audiovisual solution to watch if he gets one wrong. The app grades every lesson and records it in a gradebook; the parent opens the Parent Portal to see every gradebook, print the answer key or the eBook, edit an answer, or pause a course. The app works on computers, tablets and phones and can hold up to six lessons offline, and each course has 90 days of pause time. The site says the course "does all of the teaching", so the parent does not need to teach the math.

An Ezra lesson is a short narrated slideshow: one voice reads every word while a simple line drawing builds up on the slide — no cartoons, no characters, no questions asked of the child inside the lesson. The lesson ends with a Bible verse read aloud, and every lesson has a printable sheet for the child to do on paper. Then the child goes to the practice skills of that strand, which are hands-on: drag the pieces, tap the picture, build the number, sort the words, drop a pin on the map.

Scripture

Where the Bible sits

Teaching Textbooks makes no statement about faith on its site: it is a mathematics program with no Bible content, neither Christian nor against faith. A family that wants Scripture in the school day adds it from somewhere else. In Ezra, Scripture is not a subject on the side. Every strand of Mathematics, English, Spelling and Geography closes with a verse from the Berean Standard Bible, read aloud word for word, and a Scripture practice skill sits at the end of every strand. Bible is also a subject of its own in every grade, with a character strand (obey right away, tell the truth, no quarrelling) in each. The verses are never paraphrased.

Fair is fair

What Teaching Textbooks has that Ezra does not

Math through Pre-Calculus — Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1 and 2, Geometry — which Ezra, ending at Grade 9, does not have. A worked, audiovisual solution for every single problem, and a lecture that does the teaching so the parent need not. A permanent gradebook stored on their servers, with the answer key and a searchable eBook. Offline use on a tablet, a 90-day pause per course, and printed textbooks for a family that wants a book beside the screen. A 15-lesson free trial with no expiry. And the Large Family Discount, one price for 4 to 8 students.

What Ezra has that Teaching Textbooks does not

Five subjects — Mathematics, English, Spelling, Bible and Geography — for one household price, rather than mathematics alone priced per student per course. Grades 1 and 2, which Teaching Textbooks starts after. A Bible verse in every strand of every subject, read aloud word for word from the Berean Standard Bible. Practice the child does with his hands — building the number, dragging the pieces, sorting, measuring — generated endlessly, so a child who needs ten more questions gets ten new ones, graded on the spot, with a parent report that shows mastery, minutes and where he needs a hand. One calm narrated voice with a simple drawing on every slide, and no buddies or wallpapers. A printable sheet for every lesson and a library of 147 books and packs. And two free sections of every subject and grade, with no time limit.

Questions

Questions families ask

Is Teaching Textbooks cheaper than Ezra Learning?

For one child in Math 3, Teaching Textbooks is $48.95 for 12 months, and Ezra is $180 a year at the introductory price — but Ezra is five subjects for the whole household, and Teaching Textbooks is math for one student. Two children in Math 3 and Math 7 are $112.90 a year on Teaching Textbooks; four to eight students are $239.95 with the Large Family Discount. Ezra stays $180 for up to six children.

Is Teaching Textbooks Christian?

Its site makes no statement either way: it is a math program with no Bible content, and it is neutral rather than hostile to faith. Ezra is a Christian curriculum: Bible is a subject in every grade, and every strand of Math, English, Spelling and Geography ends with a verse from the Berean Standard Bible read aloud.

Does Ezra Learning cover high school math?

No. Ezra's mathematics runs from Grade 1 to Grade 9. Teaching Textbooks runs through Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2 and Pre-Calculus, so a family with an older student needs Teaching Textbooks or another program for those courses.

Does Teaching Textbooks cover anything besides math?

No. It is mathematics only, Math 3 through Pre-Calculus. Ezra teaches Mathematics, English, Spelling, Bible and Geography for Grades 1–9; neither program has Science or History.

How is the practice different?

Teaching Textbooks gives a fixed set of problems in each lesson, typed or chosen, with a worked audiovisual solution for every one and a permanent gradebook. Ezra's practice skills generate new questions without end and are done with the hands — dragging, building, sorting — with a hint, a worked answer and a mastery score the parent sees in the report.

Can I try either one for free?

Yes. Teaching Textbooks lets any student do the first 15 lessons of any course free, with no expiry and no card. Ezra keeps the first two sections of every subject and grade free, with no time limit and no card.
