Ezra Learning vs Classical Conversations

Classical Conversations is a classical Christian homeschool community: a weekly class day with a tutor, and the parent teaching memory work at home the other four days, with tuition and fees per child; Ezra is an online Grades 1–9 curriculum in five subjects, priced for the household. Here is how they compare, line by line. Facts checked October 14, 2026; sources at the end.

In one minute

What each one is

Classical Conversations is a classical Christian homeschool program built around local communities, begun by Leigh Bortins in 1997 and now, by its own count, serving more than 45,000 families. Families join a community that meets one day a week, usually at a church, where a trained tutor leads the children through the week's new memory work, a presentation, a science activity and fine arts; the parent is the primary educator at home the other four days. Foundations (ages 4 and up) memorizes history, science, English grammar, geography, math and Latin facts in three yearly cycles, Essentials (ages 9 and up) adds writing and grammar, and Challenge (ages 12 and up) carries a student through high school with a transcript option. Their site gives the average cost of Foundations as "$600+" a year per student with books excluded; the latest fee sheet on the site (2024) lists $646 for a first student and $410 for each additional child, and the Foundations Guide is $114.50.

Ezra Learning covers Grades 1–9 in Mathematics, English, Spelling, Bible and Geography, with about 6,900 hands-on practice skills and 1,220 narrated lessons, each with a printable sheet. Scripture (Berean Standard Bible) is read word for word in every strand of every subject; there are no cartoons, games or characters. The Family plan is $15 a month per household, up to six children, and the first two sections of every subject and grade are free.

Classical Conversations fits best when…

Choose Classical Conversations if you want a community — other families, a tutor and a weekly class day your children look forward to — if you believe in memorizing a body of facts in history, science, Latin and grammar in the early years, if you want to be trained to teach classically yourself, if you want Science and History, or if you want a program that runs all the way to a high-school transcript and a senior thesis.

Ezra fits best when…

Choose Ezra if your children are in Grades 1–9, you want lessons the child can watch on his own while you work with another, you want daily practice in Math, English, Spelling, Bible and Geography that grades itself and shows you what he has mastered, you want a Bible verse read aloud in every strand, you do not have a community within reach or do not want a weekly class day, and you have more than one child — the price is for the household, not per student.

Price

What it costs your family

The biggest practical difference is how the price is counted. Classical Conversations is priced per student. Ezra is priced per household, so a second, third or fourth child costs nothing more.

only $180Ezra Family plan, a year, for everyone in the house
about $600+ a student, a yearClassical Conversations, a year, per student

Ezra: $15 × 12 at the introductory price (normally $19 a month). Classical Conversations: tuition and fees per student, set by the program; their site gives Foundations as "$600+" a year on average, books not included. The most recent fee sheet on their site (2024) lists $646 for a first Foundations student ($145 application, $106 enrollment, $395 tuition) and $410 for each additional child; Challenge was $1,681. The Foundations Guide is $114.50 and the memory-work cards and tables are extra.

Lessons

How a lesson is taught

A Classical Conversations week starts on community day: for Foundations the child sits with his age group and a trained tutor, who introduces the seven new pieces of memory work for the week — history, science, Latin, math, English grammar, geography and the timeline — and leads a short presentation by each child, a science activity and a fine-arts lesson, with the parent attending as the "lead learner" who watches the tutor model the method. The other four days the parent reviews that memory work at home with songs, flashcards and the Foundations guide, and adds his own math, reading and writing program, since Foundations is memory work rather than a full math or reading course. Nothing is on a screen unless the family chooses the online resources, and the guide and cards are the family's to keep.

An Ezra lesson is a short narrated slideshow: one voice reads every word while a simple line drawing builds up on the slide — no cartoons, no characters, no questions asked of the child inside the lesson. The lesson ends with a Bible verse read aloud, and every lesson has a printable sheet for the child to do on paper. Then the child goes to the practice skills of that strand, which are hands-on: drag the pieces, tap the picture, build the number, sort the words, drop a pin on the map.

Scripture

Where the Bible sits

Both programs are Christian. Classical Conversations' mission is "to know God and to make Him known," and it says every subject is taught "all through a Christian worldview"; each Foundations cycle memorizes a passage of Scripture (Exodus 20, Genesis 1 and John 1), and the company publishes a Statement of Faith. In Ezra, Scripture is not a subject on the side. Every strand of Mathematics, English, Spelling and Geography closes with a verse from the Berean Standard Bible, read aloud word for word, and a Scripture practice skill sits at the end of every strand. Bible is also a subject of its own in every grade, with a character strand (obey right away, tell the truth, no quarrelling) in each. The verses are never paraphrased.

Fair is fair

What Classical Conversations has that Ezra does not

A community: other families, a trained tutor and a weekly class day with presentations, science experiments and fine arts. Memory work in history, science, Latin, grammar, geography and math set to songs, and Memory Master testing. Training for the parent in how to teach classically. Essentials for writing and grammar, and Challenge all the way through high school with debate, mock trial, a senior thesis and a transcript option. Science and History as subjects. And printed materials the family keeps from one cycle to the next.

What Ezra has that Classical Conversations does not

A Bible verse in every strand of every subject, read aloud word for word from the Berean Standard Bible. A complete daily course in Math, English, Spelling, Bible and Geography — lessons that teach themselves with one calm voice and a line drawing, and practice the child does with his hands, generated endlessly and graded on the spot — rather than memory work the parent builds a program around. A report for each child that shows mastery, minutes and where he needs a hand. A printable sheet for every lesson and a library of 147 books and packs. No cartoons, games, characters or rewards shops. No community to drive to and no class day to keep. One price for the household, however many children. And two free sections of every subject and grade, so a family can see all of it before paying anything.

Questions

Questions families ask

Is Classical Conversations cheaper than Ezra Learning?

Their site gives the average cost of Foundations as $600+ a year per student, books not included; the latest fee sheet on the site (2024) lists $646 for a first child and $410 for each additional child, plus the $114.50 guide and the cards. Ezra is $180 a year at the introductory price for up to six children, with no books to buy. Classical Conversations is a community program with a tutor, so part of what you pay for is the weekly class day.

Does Ezra Learning cover high school?

No. Ezra covers Grades 1–9. Classical Conversations runs through Challenge IV, with a transcript option and a senior thesis, so a family with a high-school student needs Classical Conversations or another program for those years.

Does Ezra have Science or History?

No, on purpose. Ezra teaches Mathematics, English, Spelling, Bible and Geography. Classical Conversations memorizes science and history facts in every cycle and does a science activity on community day.

Is Classical Conversations Christian?

Yes. Its mission is to know God and to make Him known, it teaches every subject through what it calls a Christian worldview, memorizes Scripture in each cycle and publishes a Statement of Faith. Ezra is Christian as well, and reads a verse from the Berean Standard Bible in every strand of every subject.

Is Classical Conversations a complete curriculum?

Foundations is memory work and a community day; their own guide expects the parent to add math, reading and writing at home, and Essentials adds writing and grammar from age 9. Ezra is a complete course in its five subjects, with a lesson, practice skills and a printable sheet for every strand, but it has no community and no tutor.

Can I try either one for free?

Classical Conversations invites families to an information meeting with a local director; no free trial is listed on its site. Ezra keeps the first two sections of every subject and grade free, with no time limit and no card.

Are these facts current?

They were checked on October 14, 2026 on classicalconversations.com, classicalconversationsbooks.com and ezralearning.com.
