Ezra Learning vs Apologia
Apologia is best known for its creation-based science, sold as print sets and self-paced online courses from Kindergarten to Grade 12, with Bible, math and some literature beside it; Ezra teaches no science at all, so this page compares the two on Bible, English and writing, and says plainly where each stops. Here is how they compare, line by line. Facts checked October 14, 2026; sources at the end.
What each one is
Apologia Educational Ministries is a Christian homeschool publisher known first for science — Exploring Creation with Astronomy, Botany, Zoology, Anatomy, Earth Science and Chemistry & Physics for the elementary years, General and Physical Science for middle school, and Biology, Chemistry, Physics and advanced courses for high school — all "Creation-based with a Biblical worldview." It also publishes The Word in Motion Bible course for Kindergarten to Grade 8, Mathematics Levels 1–6, a high-school American Literature textbook and four self-paced literature unit studies for Grades 6–9, with live online classes in many subjects. Textbooks are written to the student in a conversational tone and sold as build-your-own sets; on October 14, 2026 an Astronomy set (textbook and notebooking journal) and a Word in Motion Old Testament set were each listed at $84.60 on sale, regular price $94.00, and self-paced online science courses at $319.00 ($287.10 on sale).
Ezra Learning covers Grades 1–9 in Mathematics, English, Spelling, Bible and Geography, with about 6,900 hands-on practice skills and 1,220 narrated lessons, each with a printable sheet. Scripture (Berean Standard Bible) is read word for word in every strand of every subject; there are no cartoons, games or characters. The Family plan is $15 a month per household, up to six children, and the first two sections of every subject and grade are free.
Apologia fits best when…
Choose Apologia if science is the subject you most want done well — a textbook the child reads himself, experiments with household items, notebooking journals and, for middle and high school, self-paced online courses with video lessons and auto-graded tests. Choose it too for Grades 10–12 science with lab credit, for live online classes with an instructor, or for a Bible course that walks through the Old and New Testament with a notebooking journal and video.
Ezra fits best when…
Choose Ezra for Math, English, Spelling, Bible and Geography in Grades 1–9 taught as one path with narrated lessons and hands-on practice that grades itself, for a Bible verse read aloud in every strand of every subject, and for a price that covers the household rather than a set per child per course. Ezra has no science, on purpose, so a family that wants both can run Apologia's science beside Ezra's five subjects.

What it costs your family
The biggest practical difference is how the price is counted. Apologia is priced per student. Ezra is priced per household, so a second, third or fourth child costs nothing more.
Ezra: $15 × 12 at the introductory price (normally $19 a month). Apologia: $169.20 a year for one elementary science set (Exploring Creation with Astronomy: textbook and notebooking journal, $84.60) and one Bible set (The Word in Motion: Old Testament, textbook and notebooking journal, $84.60), at the sale prices listed on October 14, 2026 (regular price $94.00 each, $188.00 together); the chart multiplies by the number of children. Apologia lists no English or spelling course for Grades 1–5 on its language arts page, which lists a high-school American Literature textbook ($98.00), four self-paced literature unit studies for Grades 6–9 ($72.00 each) and live classes. Self-paced online science courses for middle and high school are $319.00 each ($287.10 on sale); Math Level 1–4 sets are $85.00 ($76.50 on sale).
How a lesson is taught
An Apologia print lesson is a chapter the child reads in a textbook "written directly to the student in a conversational tone," with an audiobook for a child who reads slowly. In The Word in Motion, each of the 30 Bible lessons opens with a four-to-five-minute video from Rachael Carman, then the child reads, and works in the notebooking journal — note-taking, copywork, review questions, activity pages and flash cards — four days a week for 30–45 minutes. In the science courses he also does the experiments with household items and records them in the journal; the parent guides the work and marks it with the answer key. The self-paced online science courses for middle and high school add video lessons, a digital textbook with an audio reader and AutoGrade+ tests that mark themselves and record the result on the course site.
An Ezra lesson is a short narrated slideshow: one voice reads every word while a simple line drawing builds up on the slide — no cartoons, no characters, no questions asked of the child inside the lesson. The lesson ends with a Bible verse read aloud, and every lesson has a printable sheet for the child to do on paper. Then the child goes to the practice skills of that strand, which are hands-on: drag the pieces, tap the picture, build the number, sort the words, drop a pin on the map.
Where the Bible sits
Both programs are Christian. Apologia says "the Bible is the holy, inspired, infallible word of God" and that "the Bible cannot err," teaches that God created the heavens and the earth in six days, and writes every course "from a Biblical worldview"; its Bible course, The Word in Motion, walks through the Old and New Testament for Kindergarten to Grade 8 with storytelling, memory work and a notebooking journal. In Ezra, Scripture is not a subject on the side. Every strand of Mathematics, English, Spelling and Geography closes with a verse from the Berean Standard Bible, read aloud word for word, and a Scripture practice skill sits at the end of every strand. Bible is also a subject of its own in every grade, with a character strand (obey right away, tell the truth, no quarrelling) in each. The verses are never paraphrased.
What Apologia has that Ezra does not
Science, from Kindergarten to advanced high school, with experiments, notebooking journals, activity videos and, for middle and high school, self-paced online courses with auto-graded tests. Grades 10–12 with lab science and literature credits. Live online classes with an instructor and no parent grading. A Bible course with a video for every lesson and a notebooking journal. Mathematics Levels 1–6 in print with a teaching guide. Audiobooks of the textbooks. Printed books the family keeps and passes down.
What Ezra has that Apologia does not
English and Spelling for Grades 1–9, which Apologia does not publish for the elementary years, and Mathematics taught through Grade 9 with endless practice. A Bible verse in every strand of every subject, read aloud word for word from the Berean Standard Bible. Narrated lessons the child presses play on, with a simple drawing on every slide and no chapter to read before he starts. Practice the child does with his hands — dragging, sorting, building, dropping a pin on a map — generated endlessly and graded on the spot, with a parent report that shows mastery, minutes and where he needs a hand. A printable sheet for every lesson and a library of 147 books and packs. No games, characters or rewards shops anywhere. One price for the household, however many children, instead of a set per child per course. And two free sections of every subject and grade, so a family can see all of it before paying anything. What Ezra does not have, and will not, is science.
Questions families ask
Is Apologia cheaper than Ezra Learning?
They sell different things, so compare what you would buy. One Apologia elementary science set and one Bible set were $84.60 each on sale on October 14, 2026 (regular $94.00 each), $169.20 for the pair, per child, bought once; a self-paced online science course is $319.00. Ezra is $180 a year at the introductory price for the whole household, five subjects, up to six children, and has no science at all.
Does Ezra Learning have science?
No, on purpose. Ezra teaches Mathematics, English, Spelling, Bible and Geography and leaves science and history out. Apologia's science is the subject it is best known for, from Kindergarten through advanced high school, and a family can run it beside Ezra.
Does Apologia teach English, spelling or math?
Apologia publishes Mathematics Levels 1–6 in print. Its language arts page lists a high-school American Literature textbook, four self-paced literature unit studies for Grades 6–9 and live classes; no English or spelling course for Grades 1–5 is listed there. Ezra teaches English and Spelling in every grade from 1 to 9, and Mathematics through Grade 9.
Does Ezra Learning cover high school?
No. Ezra covers Grades 1–9. Apologia's high-school science, literature and live classes run through Grade 12, so a family with a Grade 10–12 student needs Apologia or another program for those years.
Which one puts more Scripture in front of the child?
Both are Christian. Apologia has a Bible course, The Word in Motion, for Kindergarten to Grade 8, and writes every subject from a biblical worldview. Ezra has a Bible subject in every grade, and in addition every strand of Math, English, Spelling and Geography ends with a verse read aloud from the Berean Standard Bible and a Scripture practice skill.
Can I try either one for free?
Apologia lists no free trial; it offers a free math placement test, free Book Extras, and free video lessons with the Bible textbook. Ezra keeps the first two sections of every subject and grade free, with no time limit and no card.
